Improvements

We are just now (7-21-03) breaking ground on the new sand traps

on the right side of #15 green.  Here are some pictures of

the construction and what goes into building a sand trap.

It takes a lot of dirt to create these sand traps.  All the dirt

being used here was hauled last year when

 #12 tee was being renovated.

Kevin is hard at it moving dirt in the beginning

of this improvement.

After moving the dirt in place Kevin will begin to shape the area.

While moving the dirt we found some unwanted

stumps that had to be removed.

Now Kevin is coring out the sand trap itself.

Once the trap is cored out Jeff is cutting in

the trenches for the drainage tile.

After the trenches are cut Brett and Scott must

 clean up the excess dirt.

Brett is cleaning out any dirt that has fallen back in the trench.

Now Brett and Jeff are putting together

and laying the drainage tile in the trenches.

After the drain tile is installed the crew is adding the

layer of pea gravel that will cover the tile

and the bottom 4 inches of the trap.

Brett is also smoothing the pea gravel as it is being add.

After the gravel layer is in a sheet of mesh is added to help

keep the sand from entering the gravel layer.

Finally the sand is being added to the trap.

Brett is now moving the sand around trying

to get the 6 inch layer level.

The traps are complete and the crew

is now preparing the area for sod.

We are laying zoysia slabs by hand because of the

severe incline and the irregular shapes of the traps.  In the

back you can see Brett putting in 4 inch sod staples to keep

the sod in place until it takes root.

The area is finished and we will now water the sod.

The crew (Brett, Jeff, Scott, and Kevin) has done a

fantastic job on this well needed improvement.  We hope

you not only have more knowledge on how a trap is

constructed, but will enjoy this part of our course even more.
